The Yak-12 light general-purpose aircraft was designed by Yakovlev`s design bureau (OKB-115) in 1947. While designing the aircraft it was leaned heavily on the experience from the AIR-5, AIR-6 and Yak-10 airplanes creation. It was paid a lot of attention to take-off and landing performance improvement. The prototype made its first fly on October 20,1947 (by test pilot F.LAbramov). The aircraft successfully passed flying tests and at the end of 1947 was put into serial production. The Yak-12A was used as a liaison, air ambulance, agricultural, patrol, pilot training aircraft, also for glider towing in aeroclubs and for parachute training.
A new variant of the Yak-12A was put in serial production in 1957. The aircraft differed with trapezoidal wing, automatic slats, single struts replaced twin struts under the wing outer panels, also with enlarged fuel tanks and reinforced landing gears. The Yak-12A was produced in 1957 -1960 at the plant №272.
