The first prototype of Yakovlev Yak-55 single seat aerobatic aircraft was built in 1981. Its excellent flight capabilities allow performance of acrobatics figures without losing altitude.
In May 1989 modified version of the plane named Yak-55M made its maiden flight and soon after that serial production was started at the "Progress" aviation plant in Arsenyiev city. This plane is considered to be the most suitable machine for improvement of pilot`s skills, being in the middle between Yak-52 initial training plane and a modern Su-26. Since 1992 around 100 units from all modifications have been built.
