In the mid 1940 s it became necessary to study characteristics of aerodynamics and flight characteristics of aircraft at transonic and supersonic speeds. Work on the creation of such an aircraft -named "5" - took place in 1945-1948 under the leadership of M.R. Bisnovata. The work on the plane was held in parallel with the restoration of the German project DFS 346 in the Design Bureau OKB-2. As an aircraft carrier was used the heavy bomber Pe-8. On 14 July 1948 the "5-1" aircraft made its maiden night. During the flight tests of this aircraft and its modifications for the first time in the USSR have been studied the swept wings aircraft separation from the aircraft carriers, and collected practical experience, used in creation of new high-speed aircrafts.
